Imagine if you needed some support with everyday things, like ironing your clothes, taking your medication or cooking your tea. Imagine that, instead of living in a traditional care home, you could live with a second family, supported by someone who gave you their patience, empathy, understanding and strength. Imagine your carer involved you in family life, supported you as much or as little as you needed and gave you the time, space and choice to live your life like you want to live it. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
That’s what Shared Lives is all about: people who need a little extra help with everyday stuff go and live with a specially recruited and trained Shared Lives carer, and like most families do, they navigate life together. Some of our carers provide daytime-only support, too, so don’t worry if you don’t have a spare room. Shared Lives carers provide a form of short-term, long-term, respite care and daytimeonly care that is focused not just on supporting people, but empowering people. And it works.
Shared Lives is a form of care where people who need a little extra help with the everyday stuff – like getting to the shops, cooking dinner or ironing – go and live with a specially recruited and trained Shared Lives carer and their family, or stay with them for the day.
But Shared Lives isn’t just focused on supporting people, but empowering them, too.
The person you support will become like an extended part of your family, and you’ll support them as much or as little as they need; giving them the time, space and choice to live their life like you they want to live it.
It’s not just us who think it’s great – we’ve had loads of great feedback from other professionals who can see a massive positive difference in the people they work with who are supported by Shared Lives carers.
What is Shared Lives?
But don't just take if from us....
There is something great about putting a smile on Tony's face. I know I've had a part in that.
I might get paid but this is not like a job. I get to spend my days with a good friend, doing things we enjoy - together.
I love the support I get from PSS, they are always there for me when I need them. You can't beat that team spirit when you're self-employed.
